Tips For Using A Wide Angle Lens
Saturday, June 20th, 2009Most people don’t realize that newer digital cameras have the option of changing lenses just like standard film cameras. It’s fun to explore your different options as it will help become more creative in your photography skills.
The name of the lens will let you know that its purpose is to capture a wide field of view and, therefore, allow you to put more laterally into a photographic composition than a normal lens.
The trick is to ensure that the subject of your wide angle lens photograph does not get lost in all of that extra background material.
A wide angle lens allows you to place your subject in a wider context instead of it being cropped out of its context, as it were.
Of course, the panoramic background may indeed be the subject. If this is the case then your aim should be to make sure that there is still some sort of cohesive theme to the photograph and that it is not just a collection of random objects for the viewers eye to drift over.
A wide angle lens makes it easier to have greater depth of field in your photographs. When using a wide angle lens foreground and background objects remain in focus both at the same time. This is a trick that can be achieved in other ways, but only with much more effort and ingenuity.
Wide angle lenses are great for taking photographs of things that are naturally long and stretch off into the distance – such as railroad tracks. Such photographs, if taken with a little artistic sensibility and compositional skill will really draw the viewer into the picture and give them the impression that they are travelling into it.
Photographs taken with a wide angle lens can really do a much better job of conveying distance between objects than those taken with a conventional lens. Indeed, a little creativity used in conjunction with a wide angle lens can even leave the viewer with the impression that there is greater distance between foreground and background objects, for example, than there actually was in real life.
A wide angle lens is one of those photographic accessories that will really add a whole new dimension to your photographic output and will really allow you to bring some extra creativity to the table.
Of course, it is true that for the very best results you will still have to have at least a modicum of creative and artistic compositional ability – the lens itself will not magically turn you into a brilliant photographer.
It is probably best to learn your photographic craft with conventional lenses first before buying a wide angle lens. When you’ve exhausted the creative possibilities of a camera with a conventional lens, then you’ll be in the best position, with the best knowledge, to make the most of a wide angle lens to explore new creative photographic horizons.
